The Federal Police is developing a strategic vision on artificial intelligence with the aim of responsible use. The AI strategy clarifies how the organization intends to organize itself in this field.

The Federal Police encourages innovation, and thus the development, testing, and use of AI systems. However, due to both potential risks and the legal and regulatory requirements arising in particular from the AI Act, specific processes must be strictly followed.

The Federal Police AI-Lab is a controlled and secure experimental environment where AI applications can be developed, tested, and validated before possibly being deployed within the organization. It offers a controlled environment to explore new applications, accumulate experience, manage risks, and integrate governance, security, and compliance from the outset.

The ultimate goal is to provide the Federal Police with safe, legal, and ethical access to AI in order to support staff in operational and support tasks.

Mission

As an AI Database Administrator/Engineer, you are responsible for the design, management, and optimization of database platforms supporting both traditional applications and artificial intelligence solutions.

You set up a high-performance, secure, and scalable data platform enabling the deployment of solutions such as generative AI, RAG, and machine learning.

Database & Platform Management

• Management and optimization of PostgreSQL platforms
• Installation and configuration of database clusters
• Monitoring and performance analysis
• Backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity

High Availability & Performance

• Implementation of HA solutions (replication, fail-over)
• Query and index optimization
• Monitoring of database performance

AI & Data Platform

• Support for AI data platforms and LLM workloads
• Configuration of vector databases
• Support for RAG architectures

Soft skills

• Ability to translate business challenges into concrete technical solutions
• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Continuous improvement mindset and feedback culture

Desired profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or AI
• Non-traditional backgrounds (career switchers, self-taught, open source) are welcome if you can demonstrate your impact
• Initial experience in developing applications integrating AI
• Thoroughness, attention to detail, code quality, and awareness of AI performance (latency, scalability)
• Team spirit and ease in collaborating with varied profiles (data scientists, architects, DevOps)
• Technological curiosity and interest in applied AI

Practical information

Start date: ASAP

Duration: until end of 2026 (extendable)

Regime: Full time (40h/week)

Work location: Boulevard du Jardin Botanique 50 1000 Brussels

Working conditions: Presence in the office at least 2 times per week depending on tasks and in agreement with the team, telework allowed at home or at the employer's site (in Belgium)

Team: multidisciplinary, mix of internal and external staff
